Order Number
A unique identifier for an online order. Format varies by retailer: Amazon uses "113-XXXXXXX-XXXXXXX", Apple uses "W" + digits, etc.
An order number is the unique identifier for an online order or in-store sale. Unlike a transaction code (which is per-receipt), an order number persists across all events: confirmation, shipping, delivery, returns, customer service.
Format varies dramatically by retailer. Amazon uses three-segment order numbers: "113-XXXXXXX-XXXXXXX" (where 113 is the country/marketplace code). Apple Store uses "W" + 7-9 digits ("W1234567"). Best Buy uses 12-15 digit numerics. Target online orders use a 12-character alphanumeric code.
On email order confirmation receipts, the order number is the most prominent ID — it’s what you reference for shipping issues, returns, and customer support. It’s also what links the customer’s order to internal warehouse and fulfillment systems.
For receipt accuracy, matching the brand’s format is critical: a 12-digit order number on an Apple receipt looks fake; a "W" prefix on a Target receipt also looks fake. Each brand has a signature format.
