Discount Line

A negative line item that reduces the subtotal. Used for coupons, loyalty rewards, employee discounts, and promotions.

A discount line is a negative line item on a receipt that reduces the running total. They appear in many forms: "MEMBER SAVINGS -$5.00", "COUPON -$2.00", "EMPLOYEE DISCOUNT 10% -$8.00", "AAA DISCOUNT -$15.00".

Where the discount appears on the receipt matters mathematically. Most retailers apply discounts BEFORE tax (so the tax is calculated on the discounted amount). But Whole Foods Prime savings, Target RedCard, and a few others apply discounts AFTER tax — reducing the customer’s total but keeping the tax based on the original price.

For loyalty programs, the discount line often references the program by name: "Kroger Plus Card -$1.50", "ExtraCare Bucks -$5.00". This both drives loyalty engagement and provides clear accountability for the savings.

Some retailers print a summary "TOTAL SAVED: $X.XX" prominently at the bottom — Costco, Target, Kroger, CVS — to reinforce the value of the loyalty program.
