Booking Fee
A flat fee Uber and Lyft charge per ride, separate from the fare. Funds insurance, regulatory compliance, and platform operations.
The booking fee (Uber) or service fee (Lyft) is a flat dollar amount added to every ride, separate from the per-mile and per-minute fare. It funds the rideshare platform’s insurance, regulatory fees, background checks, and operations.
Booking fees vary by city: $2.40-3.50 in most US markets. Higher in airport zones (where municipal fees apply). UberOne members get a $0 booking fee on eligible rides as a perk.
On Uber receipts, the booking fee appears as a separate line in the fare breakdown: "Booking fee: $3.20". Lyft labels it "Service fee" but it serves the same function.
Importantly, the booking fee is NOT tipped on — tips are calculated on the base fare + time + distance, not on platform fees. The booking fee also does not surge — it stays flat regardless of demand.
